Tony Ruane was a native of Co Mayo and was a life-long Irish Republican. He took part in the Black and Tan war as well as the subsequent war against the Treaty in 1922-23. He remained an active Republican for the rest of his life and served as national Treasurer of Republican Sinn Féin from 1966 up to the early 1980s. He was also honoury life Vice President of Republican Sinn Féin. He died in 1991.
